Orthodontic Treatments

We offer private orthodontic and NHS orthodontic treatment in Cheltenham. Recent changes in the NHS have brought about longer waiting times for NHS orthodontists treatment. NHS orthodontic treatment is only available for patients aged under 18 with a moderate to severe problem.
We treat orthodontic patients of all age-groups – young children, teenagers and adults who wish to have a more attractive smile via orthodontics to straighten teeth . Our orthodontists at Cheltenham Orthodontics are all highly qualified orthodontic specialists who have the expertise to treat orthodontic problems from the mild to the very severe cases of straightening teeth.
The orthodontic appliances we use depend on the situation: our orthodontists use growth modifying and removable appliances for children as are metal fixed appliances (train-tracks!) with multi-coloured elastics to straighten teeth.
Adults and children who are self-conscious may choose to have orthodontic tooth coloured bracket braces, Invisalign braces or Lingual appliances.
Invisalign and Lingual appliances are so-called “invisible” braces. They are difficult if not impossible to notice depending on the situation and are the orthodontic treatment of choice if you do not wish to be “public” about your treatment!

Cheltenham Orthodontic Treatments - Tooth coloured braces

The orthodontic brackets of the braces attached to the teeth are made of porcelain and therefore blend in beautifully with the background colour of the teeth. The orthodontic appliance works along the same principle as more visible braces, with a fine wire connecting the brackets and moving the teeth gently to the correct position. The appearance is much better due to the lower visibility of the porcelain brackets. Damon 3 brackets are 60% tooth coloured and 40% metalliic. They work faster than other types of appliance due to the very low friction between the bracket and the wire. The Damon system provided by the orthodontists at Cheltenham Orthodontics allows non-extraction treatment in the majority of cases. Cheltenham patients keen for the fastest orthodontic treatment possible often select this appliance even though there is a little more metal visible than porcelain brackets.Treatments - Invisalign

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign® is the invisible way to straighten your teeth without braces.
Invisalign® uses a series of clear removable aligners to straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets.
Invisalign® has been proven effective in clinical research and in orthodontic practices throughout America.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Our orthodontists will instruct that you wear each set of orthodontic aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each orthodontic aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move - little by little, week by week - until teeth  have straightened to the final position your orthodontist or dentist has prescribed. You'll visit your orthodontist in Cheltenham about once every 6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.
Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of orthodontic aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.
Download our informational video to learn more about Invisalign and hear from actual patients.
How Are Aligners Made? You'd Be Amazed... The aligners are made through a combination of your Cheltenham orthodontist's expertise and 3-D computer imaging technology.

Cheltenham Orthodontist Treatments - Lingual braces

Orthodontic Lingual braces allow the same full range of complex tooth movements to straighten teeth that are achievable with orthodontic braces on the lip side of the teeth. They are more versatile than Invisalign and of course, because they are on the inside of the teeth – no one need know you are wearing orthodontic braces to straighten your teeth.

Cheltenham Orthodontic Treatments - Questions & answers

My orthodontic brace feels loose:
Your orthodontic brace may be loose because some of the clips require adjustment or because part of the brace has been broken. Please contact our reception at Cheltenham Orthodontists desk during opening hours for further advice. It is best to try to keep wearing the appliance if at all possible.
My teeth feel sore or my brace hurts:
If an orthodontic brace is newly fitted or has been recently adjusted, the teeth can feel rather tender - especially when you try to bite or chew. This is quite normal for about five days after fitting or adjusting and if needs be, the same sort of pain relief medication can be taken as used for headaches. Pain which is more severe than this or more persistent is not usual and you should contact us at Cheltenham Orthodontics if this is the case. We will arrange to see you as soon as possible and you should continue with pain killers but always observe the instructions on the packet.
Something on my orthodontic brace is rubbing inside my mouth:
When a brace is fitted or adjusted, it can take some days for the skin of the mouth or gums to get used to the new surfaces of the appliance. If anything feels sharp or is rubbing, we advise using some of the protective wax which you can purchase in our oral hygiene/appliance care packs. Simply dry the area of the brace which feels sharp or prominent and apply a pea-sized piece of wax to cover it. The wax is entirely harmless if swallowed. Just re-apply as required and let your orthodontist know if problems persist.
Lots of orthodontic patients play contact sports such as rugby or hockey, to name but a few. It is very important to protect teeth from impact and injury with a mouthguard or gum shield. Speak to our staff in reception at Cheltenham Orthodontics for further advice; there are special mouthguards which can be worn along with braces and which can be purchased from your orthodontist.
I think my brace is broken:
If you think that your brace is broken, you should contact your Cheltenham Orthodontist so that we can advise you as to what to do. If it is a fixed brace and the broken part is rubbing or uncomfortable - try using some orthodontic wax to cover the component in question. A persistently offending sharp piece of wire may need to be cut or bent out of the way. If you have a removable brace - try to continue to wear it as much as you can as long as it not at risk of being dislodged.
If your headgear is damaged or broken - stop wearing it and contact your orthodontist at Cheltenham Orthodontics as soon as you can for advice.
